New Study: e-ASPECTS Predicts Patient Outcome and Risk of Bleeding in Acute Stroke

New publication in Stroke journal with 1,500 patients from the ENCHANTED trial database supports the clinical utility of e-ASPECTS

The clinical utility of e-ASPECTS on acute ischemic stroke patients was supported in a study with the ENCHANTED trial database. The study, led by Professor Craig Anderson, from The George Institute for Global Health, was based on 1,480 real-life CT scans from 111 centres in 13 countries. e-ASPECTS scores were highly correlated with baseline neurological severity and independently predicted adverse outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients following thrombolysis.

e-ASPECTS was also a strong predictor of patient outcome following thrombolysis with a 1-point decrease in e-ASPECTS score associated with a 19% higher risk of a poor outcome. The study demonstrated that e-ASPECTS can be reliably used on CT scans in a diverse and real-world population of acute ischemic strokes.

Professor Simon Nagel, from Heidelberg University Hospital, first author of the study stated, "In this large international clinical trial database (ENCHANTED), e-ASPECTS clearly predicted baseline neurological severity and prognosis in thrombolysed acute ischemic stroke patients. e-ASPECTS, therefore, provides a less biased and standardised assessment of the ASPECTS that could be applied to patients in randomized controlled trials as well as in clinical practice."

Dr Michalis Papadakis, Brainomix CEO added said "It is encouraging to see the results from studies which are as positive as the analysis with the ENCHANTED trial database. e-ASPECTS was tested with 1,480 real-life scans and proved to be an excellent tool to predict the recovery and risk of hemorrhage of stroke patients following thrombolysis."
